Project Description
Kyakonye Allan
Kyakonye Allan used his residency to begin research and compose sketches for his new concept, “The First Caesarean”.
Images from the mid-1800s suggest that caesareans were being performed in the Bunyoro Kingdom at least 10 years before the first successful one in the Western World. For Kyakonye this led him to question other histories and cultures.
Through whose lens are we viewing our history? Which other cultures also claim to have had the first caesarean in South East Asia and the Middle East? What are the circumstances under which they happened (were they consented to? should we sacrifice the life of a mother for the life of a potential king?).
