The Organisation

Registered in 2012, 32° East is a centre for the creation and exploration of contemporary Ugandan
art. Based in Kabalagala, Kampala, we provide the artistic community with tools and resources to
support their work. Over recent years we have:
● hosted over 70 artists in residence
● engaged over 10,000 members of the public through our public arts festival KLA ART
● built a network of over 50 arts organisations worldwide
● facilitated international exchanges in over 21 countries

In 2023 we opened doors on Phase I of the first purpose-built art centre in Kampala, providing
artists with world-class facilities for their work. The innovative ecological design from New Makers
Bureau will have a library, 6 artists studios, a cafe and art shop, workshop space, accommodation
and a gallery.

Job Title: Programmes Manager
Reporting to: Director
Location: 32° East, Kabalagala, Kampala
Contract: 2 years (renewable)
Start Date: Mid August/September 2023

Description

The Programme Manager will work closely with the Director and the rest of the 32° East team to
deliver the residencies, workshops and other programmes of 32° East. They are responsible for
establishing 32° East’s annual programme which includes local and international residencies,
exchanges and off site projects.

The role requires that the Programmes Manager reports to and works closely with the Director. The
Programmes Manager should be able to represent 32° East, successfully develop the work of 32° East
and build and nurture strong relationships.. The ideal candidate is highly personable and an
exceptional communicator.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Artists’ in Residence

● Managing open calls and applications process;
● Coordinating selection panels and shortlisting, final selection communication;
● Provide hospitality to visiting artists, occasional meals and accompaniment to events;
● Facilitate access to resources, networks and for artists during their residency;
● Connect artists in residence to members of the community, facilitate critique sessions;
● Support the organisation of Meet the Artists and Open Studios;
● Gather artist in residence feedback and share with team;

Research and Programming

● Assist the Director in developing the annual programme;
● Research and develop ideas for residencies, exchange, and public engagement, in line with
the mission and vision of 32° East;
● Plan and execute other programming such as discussion series, workshops, KLA ART
festival;

Communication

● Build on and maintain our year-round comprehensive communication strategy (on
social media and newsletters) to connect with our community and highlight the work
of 32° East, our partners, and artists;
● Manage social media platforms through creating content, managing comments, and
tracking social media analytics (Facebook, lnstagram, Twitter, LinkedIn);
● Establish a press strategy including maintaining a mailing list of press contacts and creating a
template for press releases for relevant projects, and maintain record of press relevant to
32° East and the Ugandan arts scene;
● Serve as main point of contact for web designer, ensuring website is updated and maintained
● Oversee graphic designs, photography and visual identity deliverables on all projects;
● Review all written materials for programs, press releases, grants, newsletters, website
assets, and other key external facing materials

Partnerships

● Build relationships with potential partners for public art projects and programming
● Assist with grant applications
● Manage all grant reporting and funder recognition requirements
● Manage partnership details, contracts, and mentions across all communications
● Develop and maintain a strong network in both the local and international artistic
community by regularly attending arts events in the city and representing 32° East at
speaking engagements and other opportunities;
● Provide team with informed feedback from workshops/events;
● Plan and oversee cooperation with local partner organisations of 32° East;

Essential

● Minimum 4 years relevant work experience
● Belief in the transformative power and possibility of art
● Strong relationship builder
● Demonstrable knowledge of the Ugandan, East African and International art scene
● Experience of working directly with artists or other creative professionals, supporting them in the development of their research or the creation of new work;
● Excellent written and verbal communications skills including editing and proofreading
● Experience managing web and digital content
● Strong, proven competencies in social media management
● Understanding of visual identity
● Impeccable attention to detail
● Experience in writing for different audiences
● Ability to multitask, delegate and prioritise within a busy working environment
● Confident working independently but also as part of a small team
● Must be eligible to work in Uganda

Desirable

● Experience working in a visual arts organisation;
● Experience of working in a small-scale arts organization;
● Interest in research-based artistic practice;

Benefits, Terms and conditions

● Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:30pm, some attendance of evening and
weekend events will be required, compensated by time off in lieu

● Probation Period: 3 months
